What does a person do if they can&#8217;t master the keyboard? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at some information that can\nhelp you learn how to type faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1) Practice Makes Perfect<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It may sound silly, but practice is the way to\nbecome the master of your keyboard. Nobody is born knowing a skill. To become\nan excellent typist, you have to practice. Your brain has to learn where the\nkeys are via muscle memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though typing lessons are not offered in schools, the internet can fill that void. Your typing skills\nwon\u2019t be either. Set goals and practice regularly. Everyone\nreading should have a hand in the air! I\u2019ve done that a few times alone just\nwriting this article. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FYI-all of those things that may feel\ncomfortable isn\u2019t helping your typing speed at all. As a matter of fact, they\nare slowing you down. So, in this case, what feels good actually isn\u2019t good at\nall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Proper posture is key to typing faster. You can\u2019t properly access your keyboard unless you do. Utilize the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chiropractic.on.ca\/public\/your-back-health\/office-ergonomics\/\">following tips<\/a> for proper typing form:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Sit up straight, and keep your\nback straight while typing.<\/li><li>Keep elbows bent at a right angle\n(90 degrees).<\/li><li>Adjust the screen height so the\ntop line is at eye level<\/li><li>Keep a distance of 45-70\ncentimeters between your eyes and your computer screen. <\/li><li>Maintain a neutral, straight wrist\nwhen typing.&nbsp; Never rest your body weight\non your wrists.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only will proper posture help you type faster, but it will also help you avoid RSIs (repetitive stress injuries). Alan Hedge, Director of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Laboratory at Cornell University, has done <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/health-science\/typing-this-article-could-have-injured-me-heres-why\/2019\/01\/04\/7e3a9900-0d1a-11e9-8938-5898adc28fa2_story.html\">extensive research<\/a> on topics related to workplace ergonomics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPrevention is better than reaction,&#8221;\naccording to Hedge. His research has shown that each keystroke adds force to\nour fingers. Typing at an average pace of 6000 keystrokes per hour, multiplied\nby seven hours per day, five hours per week, is an additional 20 tons of force\non your fingers per Hedge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Proper posture helps take some of that force\noff. Poor posture can also cause stress injuries in one\u2019s neck, back, and\nwrists\u2014including the well-known Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. No one has time to deal\nwith any of these ailments! Focus on maintaining good posture, and you will see\nyour typing speed increase as well as lowering your risk of RSIs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3) Learn To Type Without Looking At the Keyboard<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are a novice typist, or a person prone\nto making errors, you are probably reading this thinking, \u201cYou have GOT to be\nnuts!\u201d While that may be true, I\u2019m not crazy when it comes to this typing tip.\nYou will type faster when you stop looking at the keyboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Add touch typing to your online typing\nlessons. The same sites that offer typing lessons offer instructions on touch\ntyping. Train yourself to keep your eyes on the screen. Let your muscle memory\nmove your fingers to where they need to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some touch typists can hit speeds of over 100\nwords per minute. Most touch typists average between <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Touch_typing\">60-80\nwords per minute<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4) Use An Ergonomic Keyboard<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An ergonomic keyboard looks far different from your standard keyboard. Some have curves, while others have the keyboard split in half. This unique look is why so many people avoid them. Quite frankly, you shouldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That split or curve in the keyboard is what\nhelps you reduce stress on your hands, arms, and wrists. It also forces you to\nuse correct hand positioning to type. And by splitting the keyboard in half, it\nmakes you break poor typing habits like reaching further than you should for\nkeys. This will help increase your typing speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More research is still needed before groups\nlike the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/niosh\/docs\/97-148\/pdfs\/97-148.pdf\">CDC<\/a> give these keyboards their endorsement.\nBut get ahead of the curve, and adapt now. Preventing an injury is always the\nbest course of action. Not to mention, you will type faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5) Learn Keyboard Shortcuts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t have to learn every keyboard\nshortcut. There are too many to memorize all of them! But learning the ones you\nneed most frequently will save you copious amounts of time.
